Why Handwriting Still Matters in a Digital Classroom

Tablets, laptops and interactive screens have earned their place in the classroom. They can make learning more accessible and, for some pupils, remove barriers.
But there is one very ordinary classroom tool we shouldn’t be too quick to replace: the pencil.
Handwriting can look old-fashioned beside a keyboard, yet growing research suggests that the physical act of forming letters and words may play an important part in how children learn, remember and make sense of information.
Handwriting is doing more than recording an answer
When a pupil writes by hand, they aren’t simply transferring words from their head onto a page. Their brain is coordinating movement, shape and language at the same time.
A 2024 study using high-density EEG found that handwriting produced more widespread patterns of brain connectivity than typing. The researchers linked these patterns with processes involved in learning and memory, suggesting that the precise movements involved in writing by hand can create useful conditions for learning.
In classroom terms, the slightly slower option may sometimes be the more useful one. A neatly typed paragraph can look impressive, but valuable learning may also be happening in the pencil marks, crossings-out and carefully formed letters along the way.
For early readers, forming letters matters
This is particularly interesting in the early stages of literacy.
Research published in 2025 compared young children learning letters and words through handwriting or typing. The children who practised by hand performed better on tasks including naming letters, decoding words and identifying written words.
Think about what handwriting asks a child to do. They have to notice the shape of a letter, remember how it is formed and reproduce it themselves. Pressing a key gives them the finished symbol instantly.
For teachers building secure foundations in phonics, spelling and writing, handwriting is therefore much more than a presentation skill. It can become part of the learning itself.
Slower can sometimes mean deeper
Speed is useful, and it is one of typing’s great advantages. But faster doesn’t automatically mean better understood.
A 2024 meta-analysis covering 24 studies found that college students taking and reviewing handwritten notes achieved stronger academic outcomes than those typing their notes, even though typing allowed students to record considerably more information.
Primary pupils may not be taking lecture notes, but there’s a useful classroom principle here. When children jot down key vocabulary, explain something in their own words or record what they’ve learned, writing can create a valuable moment of thinking time.
It doesn’t have to be pencil versus keyboard
None of this means laptops and tablets should be packed away or that every pupil should be expected to write everything by hand.
Typing can be an important option for children who find handwriting physically difficult, pupils with additional needs, or those who can express their ideas more successfully using technology. The research itself supports a balanced approach rather than abandoning digital tools.
The useful question isn’t, “Which is better?” It’s, “What do I want pupils to get from this task?”
If the aim is letter formation, spelling practice, recalling key knowledge or slowing down to process an idea, pencil and paper may be worth choosing. If the aim is accessibility, collaboration, editing or producing a longer piece of work, digital tools may be the better fit.
Sometimes the simplest classroom resources are doing more work than we realise. The humble pencil is a very good example.
