International School Library Month

International School Library Month

It’s International School Library Month!

Organised by the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), International School Library Month runs every year in October, to celebrate the importance of school libraries across the world. This year’s theme is “School Libraries: Community Connectors”. You don’t need to be a member of the IASL to take part – it’s open to everybody – and there are some great ways to join in this year.

Poster Design Contest

This year, ISLM are running a poster competition for schools around the globe. But hurry, entry closes on 30th May 2024! You can find out more here.

Celebrate Literature from Other Countries and Cultures

The international aspect of the event gives you a great opportunity to introduce your pupils to literature from other countries. Why not try one or more of the following:

  • Create a display of translated books in your library
  • Choose a country and create a display about the literature of that country
  • Ask pupils to create book posters with an international theme and use them to create a display in your library
  • Hold a poetry reading in your library with a mixture of famous translated poems and pupils' own poetry
  • For older learners, create a project for pupils to research writers from another country
