Half-Term Ready

Half-Term Ready

Quick Wins to End the Term Calmly

Let’s be honest, that final stretch before half-term can feel long. The kids are tired, routines are wobbling, and you’re juggling assessment, admin, and that creeping countdown in your head.

The good news? You don’t need a big behaviour overhaul or a brand-new system to finish strong. A few small, intentional tweaks can make the last days calmer, more positive, and far more manageable.

Here are some quick wins that actually work when energy (yours and theirs) is running low.

1. Tighten the routine — don’t loosen it

It’s tempting to relax expectations when everyone’s exhausted, but pupils often need more structure at this point, not less.

Try:

  • Keeping start-of-day and end-of-day routines exactly the same
  • Using clear visual reminders for expectations
  • Referring back to class rules rather than renegotiating them

Consistency = safety. Safety = calmer behaviour.

2. Over-communicate praise (yes, really)

When pupils are tired, they need reassurance that they’re still doing okay. This is where frequent, visible recognition makes a real difference.

Instead of:

“Well done everyone.”

Go for:

  • Named praise
  • Specific effort (“I noticed how quietly you lined up”)
  • Visual rewards pupils can see and keep

It’s not “just a sticker” — it’s a moment of being noticed. And those moments add up fast.

3. Lower the cognitive load

Not every lesson needs to be a masterpiece in the final week. Quick swaps that help:

  • Familiar formats instead of brand-new tasks
  • Shorter chunks with movement breaks
  • Clear success criteria pupils already recognise

Children behave better when they know what success looks like.

4. Make expectations visible (and boringly clear)

This is not the week for vague instructions shouted over chatter. Visual prompts, desk reminders, and behaviour charts:

  • Reduce verbal overload
  • Support SEN pupils especially well
  • Save your energy

If pupils don’t have to remember expectations, they’re far more likely to meet them.

5. End each day on a positive note

The last five minutes matter more than we think. Try:

  • A quick reflection (“What went well today?”)
  • A shout-out for effort or kindness
  • A calm, predictable dismissal routine

You’re not just ending the day, you’re setting the tone for tomorrow.

A final reminder

You’re not failing because this week feels hard. You’re tired because you’ve been giving everything.

You don’t need more energy. You need systems that carry you over the line.

If you’re looking for ready-to-go rewards, visual behaviour tools, or personalised resources that save time and support calm classrooms, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
