As well as finding out the basic information about your learners, talk to their previous teachers to find out the following:
It’s great to let pupils start the school year with a clear slate, and make up your own mind about abilities and behaviour, but being prepared with information about previous years will always be useful.
Create your weekly timetable for the first term and use this as a basis for lesson planning. Based on what you know about your pupils, their learning levels and their friendships and rivalries, create your seating plan and classroom layout. You can also decide now, how you would like to motivate and reward your pupils for the next year, or if you would like to introduce a behaviour scheme.
Once you have decided on your classroom layout, you can start to get creative and make it more welcoming for the first day of term. A bright ‘Welcome’ sign, or some decoration on your classroom door, is a lovely way to say hello to your new pupils.
Inspiration for classroom displays can be difficult at the start of term, before your pupils start creating work to put on the walls. Why not use some wall space to create a display showing your weekly timetable, classroom rules and behaviour/reward charts? That way your pupils know what to expect and what is expected of them from the first day of term.
You can also make your reading corner cosy, to make it more enticing for reluctant readers and more engaging during story time. You can also add library labels to your books, or even ‘This book belongs to…’ stickers to make sure they don’t get misplaced when term starts.
There are lots of great ways to prepare for the new school year, but none are more important than making sure that you are well-rested and mentally prepared. So, whilst you are preparing make sure you take some time for yourself, and make the most of the summer break where possible.
